  Website revenue: $100,000–$1 million per year. Visitors per month: 10,000–100,000. Started using it: October 2005. Chose it because: Was recommended to us at a marketing conference by another attendee, and it fit our budget at the time. Date stopped using it: Febraury 2007 for the following reason: I was no longer working with the client.

  What results did you get from it?: We were able to boost sales conversion on the sales page of a new product launch by over 400% in less than 5 days by using a full multivariate taguchi test.

  Full review: The two best things about Split Test Accelerator was the speed in which we got results and the awesome customer support. The thing I liked the least was the interface for setting up tests and using the software, but I understand this has been improved greatly since I have last used it and now is much easier to work with. We ran dozens of experiments on sales pages, landing pages, etc. I would recommend you be comfortable with PHP and MySql before attempting to work with this tool, or have a tech guy to install it. Once installed, a basic knowledge of HTML is needed to set up the tests. Jim Stone (developer) and his crew will give you world class support. Can’t say enough about them when it comes to how great they are to work with. This software is for businesses who want fast multivariate testing and have a little tech ability to set it up. Not sure how it would work for a large businesses, but we never had any problems with it and we banged on it pretty hard.

  If you aren’t testing… you are leaving money on the table.

  Website revenue: Less than $100,000 per year. Visitors per month: 1,000–10,000. Started using it: October 2008. Chose it because: It was recommended by my marketing coach at the time. Date stopped using it: October 2008.

  What results did you get from it?: I was able to determine the original blue background converted twice as much as the white test background. Such a simple thing made a big difference.

  Full review: I wish I would have known how difficult it was to setup. It was not intuitive at all.

  STA provides a default option for each conversion, so if your database fails the content of your website will still be displayed. That is a neat feature.

  I don’t like how complicated it is to install, setup, and track results. The interface needs to be redone. I would suggest step by step wizards to setup. I ran 10 experiments over a 6 week period. Users need immense technical expertise. I have been doing web design for 5 years and have installed many scripts. I could not figure STA and the programmer I outsourced it to had troubled as well. This is suitable for very technical users who need advanced features. Google WSO provides similar features with a much better interface.

  I’ve used Jim’s software for over a year to help improve an ongoing affiliate marketing campaign. Using his software I was able to increase my conversion rate (click-thrus) from 30% to over 50%! I did this using simple A/B split testing.

  What’s great about the software is that it also includes complete traffic source and keyword statistics. A simple import procedure allows you to add financial results from the conversions so you have earnings per click, broken down by keyword or source. It’s built-in dayparting helped me reduce my adwords spend by over 20% without hurting my revenues. Its revenue by source also helped me reduce my Bing and Yahoo search spend by 100% (I stopped using them!).

  With Jim’s help modifying some source code, I was able to use the split testing software for business-to-business telemarketing script testing.

  Strengths:

  1. Jim is very, very helpful.

  2. Software is feature rich

  3. One-time payment (free A/B split testing version is available)

  4. Source code access (well documented)

  Limitations:

  1. Definitely requires you know your way around LAMP.

  2.You can only run tests on pages residing on the server where the software is installed. So, for instance, if you wanted to provide split testing as a service to your clients, they would have to allow storing their landing pages on your server- not an option in most instances.

  3. You’re limited to 10 simultaneous tests (not a hard limit, but you run the risk of data corruption if you run more).

  All in all, I can heartily recommend STA- as long as you can live with the limitations mentioned above and you have technical know-how.

  All I can say is: This software ROCKS! It is truly amazing! I started using it in 2008, and since then I have become a Split Test FANATIC.

  This software is very easy to use, once you understand where to place the small snippets of code. Yes, it takes some basic understanding of html and where to place codes inside an HTML document, but the effort is WORTH it.

  I’ve increased my conversion by DOUBLE more than once, resulting in huge net increases in my business.

  I’ve increased my Opt-in rate from 2.5% stating, to 20% now, on general incoming traffic, in less than 8 weeks.

  For the price, this is THE BEST testing. It blows Google Web Optimizer simply because it uses “Fractional Factorial” testing, specifically Taguchi testing, which makes use of specific “orthogonal arrays” (I know, some crazy math stuff)

  What this means is that the tests run FAST and are ACCURATE.

  I give this software my absolute highest recommendation. It is the most used tool I have inside my information marketing business.

  Try it and see for yourself! There is a free version which allows for A/B testing, and all functions are live except the Multi-variate aspect of the test. If you like what you see, simply upgrade and the rest works!

  An STA test takes some time to set up, but each test is extremely illuminating and precise… so think of STA as the Ferrari of split-test scripts: Demanding, but ultra-powerful. It tracks time, interactions, keyword performance– you name it. If you’re serious about making real money from your visitors, I’d definitely recommend it. Also, Jim Stone is a very helpful guy.
